Magic Box - wonderful interactions between physical and digital

Saw this new product and thought I'd share - it is a wonderful exhibition technology that keeps the physical object in the exhibition space but allows an amazing experience through a transparent and touch sensitive layer of digital content.

I think this product has a rather wonderful interaction between the physical and the digital. For those of us who worry that books and objects may stop being seen in real life but always mediated by technology this product does a great job of bringing the two together so the best of both worlds is possible.

The revolution starts here: open access to digital cultural heritage collections in the UK

A report was released this week that is the single most important piece of research conducted on the subject of copyright and cultural heritage in the UK. Conducted by Dr Andrea Wallace this work needs to signal the start of an evolution in practice for UK museums, libraries and archives with a revolution in access and re-use for the general public. As the report states, we need policy that breaks down " the barriers existing between the UK’s outstanding cultural collections, including public access to and reuse of them ".

Government Shutdown = Cultural Shutdown

The US Government shutdown began on the 1st October 2013. This Federal shutdown of public services is having a disproportionate effect upon cultural institutions - whether in the closure of physical spaces (for example museums or National Parks), digital resources (digitalpreservation.gov) or funding streams (National Endowment for the Humanities). http://storify.com/juliemmoos/government-shutdown-status-updates I find it ironic that on this day in 1890 the Yosemite National Park was dedicated in California and here, on that same day, in 2013 the Government shutdown is closing that park for an indeterminate period.
